Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low hand.
