Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with several trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
